The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
