A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
